Credentials

Steven W. Shaw earned his Bachelors Degree from Brigham Young University and his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Golden Gate University in San Francisco where he served on the Jessup International Moot Court. He is a member of America’s Top 50 Lawyers, Elite Lawyers and holds the prestigious “Highly Rated” designation for Legal Ability & Ethic Standards on both LexisNexis and Martindale & Hubble Peer Reviews. He has litigated in 9 states while assisting and consulting with litigation in 19 states. He has appeared in U.S. Tax Court and in the U.S. Court of Claims. He has handled appeals before the Fourth, Eighth and Ninth Federal Circuits, Tribal Courts, to the Supreme Courts of Arizona, Idaho, Nevada and before the United States Supreme Court (cert. den.). He served for eight years on the Board of Directors of the Idaho Trial Lawyers Association and was one of four who created the Trial Attorney Specialist designation. Having published over 20 legal articles or books, he has been a speaker at nearly as many legal seminars (state and nationwide). He was a speaker at the National Association of Property Managers, and has been a featured guest on numerous radio broadcasts. He has been on the faculty of the National Business Institute and has been speaking in seminars sponsored by them for attorneys since 1995.

Experience

Over his 40 year career, Steven W. Shaw has tried a number of multimillion dollar insurance and real estate cases. One trial lasted 8 months (including recesses). He acted as State representative to the Nationwide Breast Implant Class Action in Alabama. He worked for Sullivan, Roche and Johnson in San Francisco, was lead trial counsel in the prominent Silicon Valley law firm of Maynard & Hogan, was the Trust Officer and lead trial counsel for an accounting firm in Oakland, California (West), was a partner and In-house Counsel for a multi-state Property Management Company (Aapex) in Hayward, California, and worked for many years as Senior General Counsel for a Real Estate Development Company (LDID) in Las Vegas, Nevada. Eventually he grew his own law firm, Shawlaw Legal PLLC, into a multi-state practice with local branches in 4 states. He recently returned to Utah after spending the better part of 3 years as lead defense counsel in a class action suit in North Carolina.

Background

He was born and raised in Oakland, California, and attended Skyline High where he lettered on the swim team. He is an Eagle Scout, holds the Silver Beaver Award and Vigil Honor from the Boy Scouts of America, served as a Scout Master for 16 years and was a Wood Badge Course Director. He volunteers in his church, worked for 2 years as a missionary in Italy and speaks fluent Italian. He was a volunteer for 5 years at a center for grieving children (Canary Gardens) and was a volunteer clergyman for 4 years in the federal and state prisons of California and Idaho. He was a founding member of the Pocatello Arts Counsel and has toured in performing arts companies through parts of the U.S., Canada and Europe for 4 years. He feels his greatest achievement has been to be the father of 4 wonderful children, one of whom was adopted from a Russian orphanage, and as husband to his beautiful and loving wife, Debra Shinkle, M.D.
